Floods swamp parts of Taiwan as typhoon Kong-rey moves away
Low-lying areas in Taiwan were inundated by floods after a strong Typhoon Kong-rey swept across the island on Thursday (October 31). The storm hit the mountainous and sparsely populated east coast county of Taitung, according to Taiwan's Central Weather Administration, with strong winds and torrential rain affecting almost all the island. The fire department reported the death of one person after their truck was hit by a fallen tree in central Taiwan. Kong-rey is the largest storm by size to hit the island in nearly 30 years. It is forecast to graze China along the coast of Fujian province on Friday (November 1) morning. China's financial hub Shanghai is bracing for potentially the worst rains in more than 40 years. - report from Reuters
