Florida Abortion Laws Potentially Seeing Historic Changes As Presidential Primaries Loom| Facing SFL

CBS Miami

In this week's edition of Facing South Florida: Katherine Fernandez Rundle has been the state attorney in Miami-Dade County for more than 30 years. Since then she has won re-election seven times and if no one files in the next two weeks to run against her this year, she will automatically be re-elected to another 4-year term. Rundle is credited with creating the state’s first domestic violence court, and a human trafficking task force, among other things. But her tenure has not been without controversy. She has never filed charges against a police officer for shooting and killing someone on duty, even though there have been numerous questionable police shootings. Plus, the Florida Supreme Court said the state privacy provision of the state constitution does not protect a woman’s right to have an abortion. Because of that ruling, Florida’s six-week abortion ban will take effect on May 1st. However, the court also agreed to allow a constitutional amendment protecting abortion in the state in the November ballot. CBS News Miami's Jim DeFede talks to State Senator Lauren Book about what it all means.
