Former judges call for reversal of longer sentences to ease overcrowding

A former judge has told Sky News an "urgent review" of prisons is needed and a reversal on "sentence inflation", a trend of prison sentences doubling in length over the past 50 years. Ex Lord Chief Justice, Lord Thomas of Cwmgiedd said there was "not that much evidence" longer sentences acted as a deterrent. He said overcrowding means resources aren't available to properly rehabilitate people and it was clear the "current system is not working".
