Former Labor MP weighs in on Trump's plans to gain control of Greenland and Panama Canal
Former Labor MP Michael Danby has weighed in on US President-elect Donald Trump's ambitions to gain control of Greenland and the Panama Canal. Speaking from his Mar-a-Lago estate on Tuesday, the incoming president launched into his plans to acquire Greenland by placing tariffs on Denmark at a ‘very high level’ if it would not cede control of the world’s largest island. Mr Danby argued Trump's comments should not be seen as a literal attack on Greenland, but rather as a negotiation tactic. “This is a negotiation. Trump is not even president yet. He's opening the batting by suggesting that Denmark needs to spend more on defence," he told Sky News host James Morrow. “And on both occasions, Denmark and Greenland need to be concerned about Beijing's activities in Greenland because Greenland is very strategically sighted across the Arctic between China, Russia and America. And it's a legitimate area of concern.”
