Former US Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm honoured
Former US Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm was honoured in a separate ceremony at Parliament following the Independence Day Parade. A portrait of the first black woman elected to the US Congress was unveiled to mark the 100th anniversary of her birth. Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley says Shirley Chisholm embodies Barbadian leadership on the global stage when women were not seen and black people had just come into their own. United States Congresswoman and former aide to Shirley Chisholm, Barbara Lee describes the stalwart as her mentor. She says it was Ms. Chisholm who encouraged her to join the political landscape, resulting in her being the 20th woman elected to Congress.
