French far-right party leads in first round of general election

France's far-right party has scored historic gains in the first round of the nation's general election. The French Interior Ministry reports final first round results showing a resounding victory for Marine Le Pen's National Rally - achieving 33 per cent of the votes. Left-wing coalition, New Popular Front, won around 28 per cent of the votes while President Emmanuel Macron's centrist bloc Together alliance came in third with about 20 per cent of votes. President Macron has called for a broad alliance ahead of the second vote this Sunday. CNA's William Denselow tells us more about why the French far right has secured so many votes.
