French woman at centre of mass rape case denounces husband, calls suspects “degenerates”

Gisele Pelicot, a French woman whose husband recruited dozens of men to rape her while she was drugged and unconscious, rejected claims by her husband and one of his chief accomplices that they regretted harming the women they love. “Forgiveness does not exist,” the 72-year-old told the court, adding that the men were “degenerates.” The trial of Dominique Pelicot and 50 other men in Avignon, a city in France’s southeastern Provence region, has triggered protests across France in support of Pelicot, who has become a symbol of the fight against sexual violence. “She trusts the justice system. That’s why she is present. She has nothing to hide, she is not afraid of anything,” said her lawyer, Stephane Babonneau. Gisele Pelicot insisted on a public trial to expose her former husband and the 50 men he is accused of inviting to rape her.
