The lobby for implementation of front-of-package warning labels is intensifying. The latest effort involves the launch of a media campaign by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Barbados at the Golden Square Freedom Park in Bridgetown. Chairperson of the Barbados Childhood Obesity Prevention Coalition, Professor Anne St. John says concern remains that many prepackaged foods have high levels of added sugars, sodium, saturated fats and refined carbohydrates. She says nutrition warning systems are important to tackle the growing problem of chronic non communicable diseases. President of the Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners Dr. Lynda Williams says several Barbadians are considered medically obese and are at risk of developing major health problems. She says ways must be found to avoid a crisis.
