Gaza hospitals open due to ‘sheer determination’ of staff: Doctor

Dr James Smith, an emergency physician who recently returned from Gaza, says hospitals in the enclave, in particular in the north, cannot provide basic levels of care after 12 months of Israeli bombardment and military raids. Talking to Al Jazeera from London, he noted the Kamal Adwan Hospital, the Indonesian Hospital, and al-Awda Hospital in northern Gaza have all been struck by Israeli forces in recent days. “They have been systematically deprived of basic medical equipment and fuel,” Smith said, adding two patients at the Indonesian Hospital were “killed” because of the lack of fuel required to run essential medical equipment. “The fact that these hospitals remain open is sheer determination of their staff,” said Smith.
