After a year of Israeli strikes on Gaza, the strip faces a massive challenge of how to clear over 42 million tonnes of rubble. The United Nations estimates that clearing the debris could cost $1.2 billion, with dangers including unexploded bombs, decaying bodies, and hazardous materials such as asbestos. There are also concerns about long-term health risks from toxic materials as well dust pollution. The rubble, about 8 times the weight of the Great Pyramid of Giza, has damaged or destroyed two-thirds of Gaza’s buildings. The UN has begun small efforts in places like Khan Younis, but the task remains immense. Recycling the debris is part of the solution, but space and equipment shortages, as well as Israeli restrictions, complicate the process. Gazans have used the rubble for one tragic purpose, to build tombstones.
