Georgia elects ex-soccer player as president, protesters call it "pure treason"
Georgian lawmakers elected Mikheil Kavelashvili, a hardline critic of the West and an ex-professional soccer player as the country’s new president on Saturday. The ruling Georgian Dream party’s move to freeze the EU accession process until 2028 has provoked widespread anger in Georgia, where opinion polls show that seeking EU membership is overwhelmingly popular. Hundreds of protesters gathered outside parliament during the presidential vote, where Kavelashvili was the only candidate nominated. "What we see today is a pure treason of Georgian will, the will of the people and betrayal of the values of Georgian people and the Western values," one protester said.
