Georgia ferry dock collapse: 7 dead, 3 in critical condition after "catastrophic failure"

U.S. authorities in Georgia say seven people were killed and three are in critical condition after the "catastrophic failure" of a gangway on a ferry dock at Sapelo Island on Saturday. The collapse occurred as people were waiting for a ferryboat on the island, roughly 60 miles (97 kilometres) south of Savannah, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, which runs the ferry. "It is a structural failure — there should be very, very little maintenance to an aluminum gangway like that. But we'll see what the investigation unfolds," said Walter Rabon, commissioner of the Department of Natural Resources, Rabon added that he believes the structure was completed in November of 2021. U.S. President Joe Biden issued a statement saying he was "heartbroken" after learning about the incident and that his administration was in touch with officials and ready to provide assistance to the community.
