In Georgia, a hardline critic of the West has been sworn in as the country’s newest president. Mikheil Kavelashvili, the former soccer player was inaugurated Sunday after a tumultuous election period. Despite Kavelashvilic, 53, being the only candidate in the running after opposition parties boycotted the election, outgoing president Salome Zourabichvili told her supporters she would vacate the presidential palace but remained the legitimate officeholder. "Legitimacy comes from one source, and that source is you,” Zourabichvili said Sunday. “And where there is no trust of the people, there will be no legitimacy,” she added. News of Kavelashvilic being sworn in triggered opposition protests across Tbilisi, demanding change to what protesters described as a parliamentary “circus.” One demonstator said that “Our illegitimate government is trying to appoint an illegitimate person who does not have any background in politics, diplomatics, economics, who does not know how to rule a country other than maybe score a goal once or twice in a match.” For more info, please go to https://globalnews.ca/news/10936107/kavelashvili-inaugurated-georgia-president/ Subscribe to Global News Channel HERE: http://bit.ly/20fcXDc Like Global News on Facebook HERE: http://bit.ly/255GMJQ Follow Global News on X HERE: http://bit.ly/1Toz8mt Follow Global News on Instagram HERE: https://bit.ly/2QZaZIB #GlobalNews #Georgia #MikheilKavelashvili
