A programme that caters to the needs of the elderly came up for praises at the birthday celebrations of a super centenarian. At the Honouring Ceremony held on Friday for Rita Smyke, Minister of Social Development and Family Services, Donna Cox, said the persons from the Geriatric Adolescent Partnership Programme (GAPP) who worked alongside the family to care for Mrs. Smyke were applauded by the family. According to Minister Cox, the GAPP was under her Ministry but has since been transferred to the Ministry of Youth Development and National Service. According to Senator Cox, love is an important component of the ageing process. Minister Cox noted that anyone 65 years and over could apply to have assistance from the GAPP. The Geriatric Adolescent Partnership Programme is a short-term programme that aims to teach discipline and care for the elderly to young people between the ages of 17 and 35. GAPP responds to and addresses the growing and complex needs of Trinidad and Tobago’s ageing population through the provision of geriatric care and companionship services.
