Speaking ten days after the fatal attack on a Christmas market in Magdeburg – where a man drove into a crowd of people, killing five people and injuring 200 others – German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser says it’s still “too early to draw the appropriate conclusions” and “paint a picture” about the suspect’s motives. “The investigation does not yet provide a clear picture of the perpetrator's motives,” Faeser told reporters in Berlin on Monday, adding, “We are dealing here with perpetrators who are mentally conspicuous and often driven by crazy conspiracy theories. Such perpetrators do not fit into any threat profile. We need other indicators and concepts for action here.” Faeser previously dubbed the assailant, a Saudi Arabian doctor, as “Islamophobic,” with other experts saying he may have been dissatisfied with the treatment of Saudi Arabian refugees in Germany. Furthermore, Faeser promised a complete investigation and warned any future perpetrators that they would be met with “a hard response” now that police services have been ramped up across the nation.
