Arriving at court in Avignon, Gisèle Pelicot appeared, as ever, calm and completely composed. Outside and inside the building people lined up and applauded as she passed. She smiled and nodded, just as she does every day, to thank them for their support. In more than ten years as a journalist, I have never experienced anything quite like the atmosphere inside Avignon’s Palais de Justice as it grapples with hosting one of the biggest trials in French history. There was a huge queue, not just for the main courtroom, but also for the overflow annexe where members of the press and public could sit and listen via a video link.
