In tonight's top story: Notre-Dame cathedral was nearly destroyed by fire in 2019. On Saturday, the 12th century cathedral’s reopening was attended by world leaders and dignitaries alike – including Prince William and U.S. president-elect Donald Trump. Redmond Shannon reports. The government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is on the brink of being overthrown by rebel fighters who are closing in on the capital of Damascus. They have now taken control of two provincial capitals and are amassing in the capital’s suburbs. Vincent McAviney reports. A move to impeach South Korea’s president has failed, following his startling and short-lived decision to invoke martial law earlier this week. In a televised national address, President Yoon Suk Yeol apologized for causing panic and protests after he declared martial law. But as Mackenzie Gray reports, despite calls to step down, the president isn’t budging. Maritimers who make their living fishing baby eels – known as elvers – are outraged with a new federal plan they claim will jeopardize the entire industry. Letters obtained by Global News indicate Ottawa plans to “slash quotas” for license holders by up to 90 per cent. As Heidi Petracek reports, harvesters warn it could ruin the industry. Climate change and intensifying extreme weather impact all of us, but Pacific Island nations face the gravest threat. Pacific islanders – including Fijians – live along low-lying coastlines, making them especially vulnerable to rising sea levels and storm surges.
