Global News

Newfoundland and Labrador's commercial cod fishery is partially reopening for the first time since July 1992, when hundreds of coastal communities – that long depended on cod – lost their economic and cultural heart. Eric Sorensen explains why the moratorium is being lifted, what it means for the province and how politics may be at play. Also, questions are swirling about the future of Canada’s federal Liberal party and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, after the party's surprising by-election loss in their longtime stronghold riding of Toronto-St. Paul's on Monday. Mackenzie Gray reports on the public sentiments of support for Trudeau and what polls are saying voters' thoughts on potential successors to him. Over in the U.S., millions of Americans are dealing with severe weather in the midwest, where days of torrential rain have caused catastrophic flooding in at least four states. As Jackson Proskow explains, it's expected to get even worse before it gets better. Plus, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is back home in Australia for the first time since 2010, after the publisher was arrested for releasing hundreds of thousands of classified U.S. documents. As Redmond Shannon reports, Assange is staying quiet about his freedom for now. Back in Canada, Calgary is expected to lift its water restrictions soon, though nearby First Nations have lived without clean drinking water for years. Heather Yourex-West visits Stoney Nakoda Nations, Alta., where progress has been painfully slow despite promises from the federal government. And, some paddlers from across Canada have set off from Oka, Que., to Ottawa, on a journey to retrace the steps of an Indigenous hero, Algonquin Grand Chief Constant Pinesi. Phil Carpenter explains what the Pinesi Paddle means to those taking part.
