Prime Minister Mark Carney said Friday his government is “immediately” ending the consumer carbon price, making the change official during his first cabinet meeting. It comes on the same day he was sworn in as Canada’s 24th prime minister. David Akin reports. Carney’s cabinet will likely be short-lived, with an election call expected soon. While visiting Canada for a meeting of G7 leaders, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended President Donald Trump’s threats to make Canada the 51st state, calling it an economic “argument” that “stands for itself.” Touria Izri reports. Former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte was arrested in Manila this week on murder charges – for leading a war on drugs that led to tens of thousands of deaths. During a hearing at the International Criminal Court in the Hague, Duterte denied the charges and likened his arrest to a political kidnapping.
