Tonight’s top story: Will Donald Trump once again be elected president, or will Kamala Harris become the first woman president in the 2024 U.S. election? As ballot stations across the 50 states close and votes are being counted, Global National is offering coverage from Harris’s campaign headquarters at Howard University in Washington, D.C., as well as Trump’s campaign base in Palm Beach, Fla. Global's Neetu Garcha will have the latest from Washington, while Jeff Semple will give updates from Florida. Mike Armstrong speaks to voters in Pennsylvania — which is considered a must-win state — while Sean O'Shea speaks with residents in Michigan, where Democratic support is strong. But it will be the electoral college that decides the election, not the popular vote. There are 538 electoral colleges votes and it takes 270 to win. Each state is allocated a certain number of electoral college votes, tied to their population. and there are seven so-called “swing states” or battleground states that are considered very tight races. Eric Sorensen has it all mapped out. As the U.S. awaits the results from the election, the world is also all looking ahead and wondering how the next chapter in the country will unfold. But sometimes looking back can be instructive — such as how former U.S. presidents dealt with division, and how the foundation of the country has historically held it together. Dawna Friesen has more in this special report.
