One year after the deadliest day in Israel’s history, peace seems further away than ever with no reprieve in sight. At memorials across the country, Israelis mourned the dead and comforted the anguished families whose loved ones are still held hostage in Gaza. Jeff Semple reports from Jerusalem. More than 41,000 people have been killed in Israel’s near-endless bombardment of Gaza, according to the Hamas-led health ministry. 10,000 people are still missing in the chaos. Redmond Shannon has firsthand accounts from those inside Gaza, where people are forced to focus only on survival. Plus, a Calgary man has for months been trying to help his family flee the besieged enclave, where there is no easy way out for the millions who are trapped there. The family had been counting on a special government sponsorship program, but the application process was unrealistic and bogged down with bureaucracy. Eventually, some members of his family found their own way to safety. Heather Yourex-West reports on a reunion a year in the making. And on this sombre anniversary, Israel is ramping up its assault on Lebanon. It has not relented on its strikes targeting Hezbollah, even after devastating parts of the country.
