Global temperatures soared in 2023, broke records by wide margin: UN body’s climate expert
Every major global climate record was broken last year, according to a report released by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on Tuesday (Mar 19). This prompted the United Nations (UN) agency to sound a Red Alert to the world. WMO climate scientist Blair Trewin tells CNA’s Asia First that last year’s global temperatures broke records by almost 0.2 degrees Celsius, a “very large margin”. Such records are generally broken by “a few hundredths of a degree”, he says. However, a rapid transition towards renewable energy in many parts of the world is a bright spot, he adds.
