On Wednesday, House of Commons Leader Karina Gould and Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry of Canada François-Philippe Champagne voiced their support for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau amid speculation about his political future. Gould expressed confidence in the party's ability to win back Toronto—St. Paul's, stating, "I feel quite confident that we will be naming a candidate or there will be a candidate nominated soon," adding that while it was a loss, "it was not a resounding loss." She defended Trudeau's leadership, citing his track record in successfully leading the country through various challenges and said, "Because Justin Trudeau is the prime minister and because he's built a strong team, and it's that team that's going to get us through to 2025. " Champagne also reaffirmed his support for Trudeau's leadership and said, "Justin Trudeau is the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. I support it," adding "He's been able to bring a team around him to make sure that we deliver for Canadians." The show of support comes as Trudeau is currently dealing with the fallout from the stunning Liberal loss of a long-held Toronto seat in a byelection on June 24 and a sustained drop in the polls, prompting discussions about the party's strategy for the upcoming election.
