Gov't open to introducing of conjugal visits
Government is open to the possibility of introducing conjugal visitations for the spouses of inmates at Dodds Prison. Word of this from Minister of Home Affairs and Information Wilfred Abrahams. However, he notes that to date such a demand was not one highly requested from prisoners or their representatives. He says Government is keen to enforce all best practices at the state-run penal institution, Dodds Prison, bringing it in line with the standards obtained internationally. Minister Abrahams made the revelation during the current affairs programme, 'One on One', on CBC TV8 produced by the Public Affairs Department. Minister Abrahams says for some time conjugal visitation was not part of the culture of what exist in this region. He says of primary interest was the rehabilitation of prisoners to make a positive contribution when they reintegrate back into society. However, he says society is changing.
