Graydon Sealy passes away
The man who became the first principal of the then Garrison Secondary School back in September 1975 has passed away at the age of 94. Graydon Sealy, in whose honour the school was renamed back in 2012, is being remembered as a brilliant educator and leader. Tributes have already started to flow, following the news of his passing. Among them, former Finance Minister Chris Sinckler, now Alternative Executive Director with the World Bank Group, who was a student at the school under Mr. Sealy's leadership. He says it was with much sadness that he learned about Mr. Sealy's passing, noting it is a major loss for the island's education system. When he was honoured with the renaming back in 2012, Mr. Sealy said he was overwhelmed and deeply moved. He said he was treated like royalty for doing something he loved, noting that education was not for the faint-hearted. In his speech at that renaming ceremony, Mr. Sealy also posed some questions about education, and in particular, the 11-plus exam, which still has relevance today.
