Gunmen kill at least 40 in Pakistan passenger vehicle attack
Gunmen opened fire on passenger vehicles travelling from Parachinar on Thursday, killing at least 40 people and wounding 29, according to the chief secretary of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The attack occurred in Parachinar, a district on Pakistan's northwestern border with Afghanistan that has long been plagued by sectarian violence between Sunni and Shi’ite Muslim communities over land and power. No group claimed responsibility for the incident. Mourners gathered on Friday in Parachinar for the funerals of Shi’ite Muslims killed in the attack. Meanwhile, hundreds of protesters also took to the streets across Pakistan to denounce the killings. “A transparent inquiry of this incident should be carried out. We call on the government as well as security institutions that Parchinar, which is a great part of Pakistan, should be saved from sectarianism and should be provided safety and security," said protest leader Hayat Abbas Najafi.
