Heavy snowfall and rain sweep across the UK

The United Kingdom woke up to freezing temperatures and snow on Sunday (January 5) as authorities put amber weather warnings in place across central and northern England, as well as Wales. The UK's national meteorological service reported that sleet, heavy snow and thawing could lead to flooding in places. The Meteorological Office also warned that snow could turn to a spell of freezing rain in the Midlands, northern England and Wales, the danger of rain droplets hitting the surface and instantly freezing, making road surfaces slippery and extremely dangerous. According to local reports runways at Manchester and Liverpool airports were temporarily closed delaying travel. (Production: Leila Dougan)
