U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin wrote a letter to Israel on Sunday to make clear Washington's concerns about the levels of humanitarian assistance that have been making it to Gaza, the U.S. State Department said on Tuesday. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller told reporters that the U.S. knows it is possible to get humanitarian aid into Gaza and that bureaucratic and logistical obstacles can be surmounted. Miller criticized Israel's efforts to protect civilians, citing recent "horrific" incidents over the weekend. While acknowledging Israel's challenging environment, he emphasized the disturbing nature of recent events. "We continue to see Israel not taking sufficient steps to address civilian harm. And you have to look no further to understand that than the really horrific results over the weekend," Miller said. "We understand the very difficult environment in which Israel operates, but the results of that strike were deeply disturbing. We all saw that video and all know that it's horrifying to see people burned to death." Meanwhile, the Pentagon said in a separate briefing that the letter co-authored by Blinken and Austin was "private correspondence" and declined to discuss it in detail. "I'm not going to go into the decision making of why a letter versus a phone call. But it was meant to be a private correspondence between two senior administration officials," said Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh.
