U.S. Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh confirmed during a Thursday briefing that a tanker carrying 1 million barrels of crude oil, which was recently attacked by Houthi rebels in the Red Sea, is leaking oil where it was struck. However, she noted that the barrels of crude oil aboard the vessel remain intact, as multiple fires continue to burn. Singh warned that a major ecological "catastrophe" could unfold in the Red Sea if the Houthis do not allow salvage and recovery operations of the Greek-flagged Sounion ship. The European Union's (EU) Red Sea naval mission Aspides said on Thursday that no oil spill has been detected on the Greek-flagged oil tanker Sounion in the Red Sea. The Houthis said on Wednesday that they had agreed to allow the towing of the Sounion that has been on fire since Aug. 23. The EU mission added that is ready to "facilitate any courses of action," in coordination with European authorities and neighbouring countries to avert a catastrophic environmental crisis.
