How significant is Taiwan former president Ma Ying-jeou’s visit to China?
Chinese President Xi Jinping met former Taiwanese president Ma Ying-jeou in Beijing on Apr 10, with both men urging for the peaceful resolution of differences. The meeting comes just weeks before Taiwan swears in new leader Lai Ching-te, whom Beijing openly dislikes. Ma, a senior member of Taiwan's main opposition Kuomintang party and a proponent of closer ties with China, is on an 11-day tour across the country. Associate Professor of political science Chong Ja Ian of the National University of Singapore breaks down the landmark meeting, and tells CNA’s Asia First what is at stake.
