From Florida to Virginia, millions in the American southeast are confronting the scale of their losses. They’ve seen hurricanes before, but none like Helene. “This is the cost of living on Florida’s beaches… This is the devastation you go through living in a coastal town,” says Horseshoe Beach, Fla, resident Niki Keen while fighting back tears.
