Hurricane Milton: Powerful storm puts political spotlight on FEMA funding

As Florida residents brace for hurricane Milton, the Biden administration and Congress are facing questions relating to funding for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Monday's White House press briefing played host to a heated exchange between White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre and Fox News reporter Peter Doocy over the issue of federal funds for those impacted by hurricane Milton. “President Biden is fond of saying ‘Show me your budget and I can tell you what you value.’ If he’s got money for people in Lebanon, what does it say about his if there is not enough money for people in North Carolina?” Doocy asked. “Your whole premise of your question is misinformation, sir,” the white house press secretary replied. In the same briefing, Jean-Pierre was asked about reports that Florida governor Ron DeSantis refused to take a phone call on Hurricane Milton disaster relief from U.S. Vice President (and Democratic party presidential nominee) Kamala Harris. On Tuesday, U.S. President Biden downplayed any reported friction between his administration and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis “The governor of Florida has been cooperative, he says he’s got everything he needs… And I literally gave him my personal phone number to call,” Biden said. The powerful hurricane is charging towards the gulf coast of Florida in the wake of catastrophic damage caused by Hurricane Helene, compounding the response and putting a spotlight on FEMA as storm response has become a political flashpoint.
