Hurricane Milton barreled into the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday after plowing across Florida as a Category 3 storm, pounding cities with ferocious winds and rain, whipping up a barrage of tornadoes and causing an unknown number of deaths. It compounded the misery wrought by Helene, with damage, destruction and power outages reported from Sarasota to Fort Myers, while sparing Tampa a direct hit. Addressing the state on Thursday morning, after the devastation of Hurricane Milton, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said while the storm was "significant," its impact was not the "worst case scenario."
