A volcano in southwestern Iceland that came roaring back to life after centuries of silence has erupted for the seventh time since December 2023. The eruption sent molton lava flowing towards the Blue Lagoon, a major tourist attraction on the Reykjanes Peninsula. Some 50 homes were evacuated, as well as guests at the popular geothermal spa. The eruption poses no threat to air travel, but authorities warned of gas emissions across parts of the peninsula – including in the nearby town of Grindavik. Iceland sits above a volcanic hot spot in the North Atlantic, averaging an eruption every four to five years.
