Immigration minister granted new powers over released non-citizen detainees

Immigration Minister Tony Burke will hold new powers to track and impose curfews on released non-citizen detainees. Mr Burke will be allowed to release detainees not covered by the High Court ruling as well as impose restrictions on them if they are found to be a risk to community safety. The legislation was passed with the Coalition's support in the final sitting week of this year. It will also strengthen the government's deportation powers for those with no legal right to remain in Australia.
