India heatwave: Delhi hits all-time high of 52.9 C as water scarcity a "big problem"
Delhi recorded an all-time high temperature of 52.9 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, as extreme heat conditions gripped the north and western parts of India, sending people to seek shelter indoors. A heatwave alert has been in place for large parts of India since last week but the temperature in Mungeshpur, a densely packed corner of Delhi, crossed the 50 C mark, the weather office said. The Indian capital has had temperatures of over 45 C in previous years but never gone as high as 52.9 C. A hospital in the country’s capital set up a special heat stroke unit amid rising cases of heatwave-related illnesses, and staff were seen inflating water beds and freezing ice in preparation for an influx of heat stroke patients. "Heat waves are particularly problematic if they last for a longer period of time,” environmental health expert Amruta Nori-Sarma said. “And what we anticipate is that as warming continues worldwide — but particularly in this region — these summertime periods of extreme heat waves will become more frequent and also more intense, and also will be longer lasting. So it's kind of a triple threat.” Delhi residents also have to deal with a lack of water. "Water scarcity is a big problem here. It gets worse in the summers," said local resident Rustom Ali.
