Indonesia protests: Election law changes spark mass protests across country

Thousands of people rallied in cities across Indonesia on Friday, pressuring its poll body to issue rules for regional elections amid outrage over an attempt by the parliamentary allies of President Joko Widodo to change them in their favour. The proposed changes would have reversed a Constitutional Court decision that upheld the minimum age of 30 for candidates and facilitated party nominations. "We want to give them (parliament) a warning, that you shouldn't play with our democratic system. Don't ever toy with our constitution," said Aulia Thoriq Akbar, a student activist participating in the protests. The demonstrations have taken place in Jakarta, Medan, Makassar, and Surabaya, emphasizing widespread public concerns over the integrity of the democratic process.
