Iran coal mine blast kills at least 51, injures 20

A gas explosion in a coal mine in Iran's South Khorasan Province killed at least 51 people and injured 20, Iran's state media said. The incident occurred at 9 p.m. on a Saturday and was caused by a methane gas explosion, according to Mohammadali Akhondi, the head of Crisis Management Department for South Khorasan Province. Recounting the harrowing experience, a survivor said, "We were in the workshop, then suddenly we saw smoke coming, and after that, we couldn't breathe. I raced from the workshop and escaped but some of friends were not able to escape."
