Iran responds to Israel with barrage of missiles
The Israeli military says Iran has fired missiles towards their nation, warning residents to shelter in place. Air raid sirens and explosions rocked Tel Aviv while the Israeli military worked to deter a barrage of missiles launched by Iran on the evening Tuesday, Oct. 1. In what the U.S. calls a severe escalation, Iran said it fired dozens of ballistic missiles at Israel, according to a statement read on state television. Iran’s statement referenced the assassinations of key figures, including Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, Iran Revolutionary Guard Gen. Abbas Nilforoushan, and Ismail Haniyeh, a top Hamas leader killed in Tehran. Iran warned that this attack is just the “first wave,” threatening a “harsher response”’ if Israel retaliates militarily. An unnamed U.S. official confirmed to AP that the the U.S. is assisting Israel in its defensive preparations. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that Iran fired 200 ballistic missiles at Israel. Initial military reports indicate that Israel successfully “defeated” the attack. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan warned that Iran would face “severe consequences” for its actions.
