Irish voters ponder election results as centre-right parties seek coalition deal

With less than 10 seats left to fill in Dublin’s Parliament House as Ireland finishes counting the votes from its general election, the country’s two largest centre-right parties are expected to begin their search for a coalition partner. Projected to return with a seat total in roughly the mid-80s, it is expected that the Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil parties will now require the support of one of Ireland’s smaller bodies to govern — the minimum seat requirement being 88. The Deputy Prime Minister Micheál Martin-led Fianna Fáil, so far, has counted in with 21.9 per cent of the votes, with the Prime Minister Simon Harris-led Fine Gael trailing softly behind at 20.8 per cent. And despite the runner-up Sinn Féin — which has pulled in a promising 19 per cent of the votes — the leading parties have already ruled out a deal with the left-leaning party. Though the results are expected to be declared late Monday, some Dubliners expressed positivity that the projections could mean “stability” in Ireland, with others openly “disappointed” that the “composition” of the government might not change.
