At the monthly gathering of European Union (EU) foreign ministers on Monday, national representatives reacted to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Sunday comments rejecting a “two-state solution.” The meeting was also attended by counterparts from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan and the Arab League secretary-general. "I think that we have to stop talking about the peace, the peace process, and start talking more concretely about the two-state solution process,” EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said. “What kind of peace are you talking about? So, let's talk about what we want to do. What we want to do is to build a two-state solution." Separately, Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh said from the West Bank that there was an “international consensus on creating a Palestinian state” and that the consensus should now be “transformed into practical steps.” On Sunday, Netanyahu reaffirmed a hard line against any Palestinian state as it would pose "an existential danger" to Israel, while United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Saturday that abandoning a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict was "unacceptable."
