Israel-Hamas: Palestinians reel as countries halt funding amid UN terror allegations
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres urged governments to reinstate their funding to the UN refugee agency for Palestinians (UNRWA) on Sunday after nine key donors halted aid to the Palestinian people earlier this week. The decision from nine different countries, including Canada, the U.S. and Germany, came following allegations from Israel that several UNRWA members were involved in the fatal Oct. 7 Hamas attacks in Israel — which left more than 1,200 dead and roughly 240 people taken hostage. Regarding the allegations, Guterres said that the world organization will hold to account "any UN employee involved in acts of terror," but that the UNRWA "should not be penalized" amid Israel’s ongoing conflict with Gaza. The dire needs of the desperate populations they serve must be met,” the UN chief wrote in a statement. As of Friday, more than 26,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza following the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks.
