Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire ignites demands for end to war in Gaza

As of early Wednesday morning, the U.S.- and France-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah is officially in place. Though world leaders, Israelis and Lebanese have been celebrating the step forward in ending conflict in the Middle East, the deal has further ignited calls for a ceasefire in Gaza, as Israel continues its mission to destroy Hamas. “Just as the Lebanese people deserve a future of security and prosperity. So do the people of Gaza,” U.S. President Joe Biden said during a speech on Tuesday. “Far too many civilians in Gaza have suffered far too much and Hamas has refused for months and months to negotiate in good faith a ceasefire and a hostage deal. So now, Hamas has a choice to make,” he added. Speaking at Airport City, Israeli Minister of Defence Israel Katz said his next focus was on a deal in Gaza, while ensuring all Israeli hostages are returned home. “I intend to make every effort to create the conditions for a new hostage deal and bring everyone home,” he said, noting that the "pressure" is on Hamas. Following the murder of more than 1,200 people and kidnapping of roughly 250 in south Israel on Oct. 7, 2024, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have killed upwards of 45,000 people in Gaza.
