Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire will take effect Wednesday, Biden says
U.S. President Joe Biden said from the White House on Tuesday that a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah will take effect at 4 a.m. local time on Wednesday, after both sides accepted an agreement brokered by the U.S. and France. In his remarks, Biden said the accord was designed to be a permanent cessation of hostilities and that his administration was determined that the conflict will “not be just another cycle of violence.” Hours earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a televised address that he was ready to implement a ceasefire deal and would respond forcefully to any violation by Hezbollah, declaring Israel would retain "complete military freedom of action." According to officials, the ceasefire agreement will require Israeli troops to withdraw from south Lebanon and Lebanon's army to deploy in the region. Hezbollah would end its armed presence along the border south of the Litani River, and civilians are expected to be able to return to their communities.
