Israel should end war soon, but Hamas must leave Gaza: Ex-Israeli minister
Yossi Beilin, who served as Israel’s justice minister from 1999 to 2001, says there are two key steps Israel must take to end the war in Gaza: first, secure a prisoner-captive exchange with Hamas; and second, exile Hamas leaders from Gaza. “Israel cannot afford for Hamas to continue to govern Gaza, but it does mean that we have to continue this war forever and kill innocent people on both sides,” Beilin told Al Jazeera. “It’s enough.” If Hamas foregoes leadership, Beilin said, Israel should withdraw from the enclave and a “multilateral force of Arab countries and others” should rule it for a transitional period of a few years. “This is, I believe, the most reasonable solution to the problem,” said Beilin. Hamas officials have repeatedly said the governance of Gaza is a “pure Palestinian affair”.
