Bondi Partners Senior Advisor Peter McGauran says the Albanese government failing to rush their detainee bill through parliament “completely and utterly” backfired and “humiliated” the government. Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil has accused the Opposition of playing politics after the Albanese government failed to secure emergency removal powers for non-citizens. The Opposition and Greens in the Senate rejected the government’s urgency with the bill and referred the laws to a parliamentary inquiry for scrutiny. Mr McGauran said Labor trying to rush the bill through “completely and utterly” backfired on the Albanese government. “It humiliated the government because the whole of the Senate – the Greens, the crossbench, Jacqui Lambie, One Nation, and the Opposition – rejected their rushed approach,” he told Sky News Australia.
