Nine candidates compete for Japan’s top political position at a Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) gathering. This comes after domestic scandals hurt the LDP’s popularity, leading to Fumio Kishida stepping down. Among the frontrunners are former defence minister Shigeru Ishiba, and current Digital Transformation Minister, Taro Kono, who previously lost to Kishida. Rising star Shinjiro Koizumi, son of a former prime minister, is also in the race. The winner will lead a party that has governed Japan for most of the last 70 years, despite recent challenges and a weak opposition. Al Jazeera’s Rob McBride reports.
