Jasper wildfire: Alberta premier gets emotional over "horrific" images of burning town

Providing an update Thursday on the wildfire burning near and in Jasper, Alta., Premier Danielle Smith appeared visibly shaken, as she provided remarks on the "out of control" fire engulfing the town. “We have all seen on the news and social media the horrific pictures and videos coming out of Jasper. Homes and businesses have been lost to a wildfire that people are calling a ‘wall of flames.’ There is no denying that this is the worst nightmare for any community… Jasper we will continue to stand by you,” Smith said. “Wind gust(s) moved that fire five kilometers in, probably less than 30 minutes with a wall of fire that was about 100m high. I think people need to picture what those wildfire folks were experiencing at that time. Any firefighter will tell you there's little to nothing you can do when you have a wall of flames coming in like that. Kudos to those folks that were the heroes that stood their ground in order to fight that fire,” said Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services Mike Ellis.
