Local officials will hold an in-person briefing in Jasper, Alta., on Saturday regarding damaged and destroyed structures in the historic town, after a wildfire destroyed about a third of the Alberta mountain town. The Municipality of Jasper will be releasing a map and address list of damaged and destroyed residences and businesses on their website. A representative from the Municipality of Jasper as well as a Parks Canada official will be available to provide an update on the wildfire situation and answer questions from media. On Friday, Premier Danielle Smith, Jasper Mayor Richard Ireland and other officials were taken on a tour of the townsite where flames destroyed hundreds of properties earlier this week, consisting mainly of residential homes. Parks Canada officials confirmed that 358 structures — or about 30 per cent — within the townsite in Jasper National Park were destroyed when a wildfire burned through the community this week.
