Kenyan police fired on demonstrators trying to storm Nairobi’s legislature on Tuesday, killing at least five protesters. Sections of the parliament building were set ablaze as lawmakers inside passed a bill to raise taxes. In chaotic scenes, protesters overwhelmed police and chased them away in an attempt to storm the parliament compound, with protesters reportedly managing to enter the Senate chamber. Protests also spread from the capital Nairobi to cities such as Mombasa and Kisumu. “We are rejecting the bill, every clause. We are not asking for any amendment. We are asking them to reject it. They are afraid of us. We are going to take power with our own hands, and we are not afraid," an unnamed protester said. Kenya's army has been deployed to support the police in controlling the "security emergency" which has resulted in the "destruction and breaching of critical infrastructure," Defence Minister Aden Duale said on Tuesday in the official gazette.
